AFTER A SIMPLE LUNCH of bowls of vegetable soup that tasted like it came fresh out the can and grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, Symphony quickly determined her husband expected her to know her way around a kitchen. She didn’t want to disappoint the man and tell him she knew how to use a pressure cooker or throw meat and veggies on a bake pan, and that was the extent of her expertise in a kitchen. However, what she did know better than most was how to get what she needed by negotiation.

After removing the large red bow from the car, she opted for a drive into the town of Hydro by herself to get the lay of the land there and the gossip on her new family. Jaimie insisted on riding with her, but Symphony held up her hand.

“I have taken the subway at night in New York,” she said. “Ain’t too much Bubba and Buster can do to scare me in Hydro, husband. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.”

“You sure? I mean, I’m not doing anything that can’t wait.”

“Jaimie, they are pouring concrete for the foundation for three separate projects. Three horses have arrived this morning for shoeing. The little guy who helped me onto my horse is itching to talk to you about something, and the last thing you need is me underfoot,” she told him, leaning in for a kiss. “Besides, if you’re a good guy, tonight, we’ll play a game I like.”

In less than a minute, her cell phone was synced to the vehicle, and it tapped into the playlist on her phone. She turned up the music, fastened the seat belt, and rolled down the gravel drive headed to town. Fifteen minutes later, she arrived at a strip of buildings boasting about being on Route 66. There was a bar, an insurance company, and, to her surprise, a temp agency with a maid service. Symphony located a parking space and pulled in. Eyes followed her as she exited the vehicle and walked inside a small office staffed by a woman whose skin said she needed to stay out of the sun.

“Hey Honey, can I help you?”

“Yes, I need to hire a maid and a cook,” Symphony said.

“For you?”

“Would there be a reason I would hire one for someone else?”

The woman, whose name plate read Lacey McCafferty, leaned meaty arms forward on her desk. “You have an accent. Are you from back East?”

“Yes, Brooklyn born and bred,” Symphony said, waiting for the woman to offer her a seat.

“So, you want a maid for your house,” the lady said.

“Do you mind if I take
